503 Studio brief 1 - Responsive, LCA Film Society, Submisson
For this brief the dead of the poster submission is not given but as today is the first day of the week commencing the film showing this has been set of a personal deadline, this will give the club time to print and display the posters before the showing but is not too early as too be sent when there is another films showing before. The email address to send the submission too was found on the Facebook page at the start of the this project, filmsociety@students.leeds-art.ac.uk.
the final poster that has been sent is this -
After the poster was sent to the LCA film poster account it was post on the facebook page but unprofessional this was post under another student name. This was a mistake on the film society side of the brief, this was then highlighted via the other student. this is my work and this was a mistake on their side of the competition.

503 Studio brief 1 - Responsive, LCA Film Society, Crit Feedback
Which to submit? Any final chances/feedback before the submission?
After the 3 idea where formulated for this brief and visually mocked up, this allowed for feedback on which idea should be sent off.
Concept wise the audeince felt the script idea was the strongest which could be developed further if the brief wasn't only a small brief, but as the aim of this brief is to create a visually pleasing attention grabbing poster which will excite the audience to going to the see the film showing the most popular idea was the college style idea. This is due to the quirky nature of the poster appealing the range of student at the college rather than just the graphic design student via the use of different style and media, this also is fits with the style preferred by the client in past research, The final poster has a strong concept to underpin the design but is visually more suitable for this brief, it express bird man film in ambiguous way that will intrigued the audeince.

503 Studio brief 1 - Responsive, LCA Film Society, Development
idea 1- Typographic Style
The film follows the main characters constant battle with his inner voices, and inner persona of BirdMan a role he played famously for many years. This typography idea shows the differences between the bird man persona and Riggan Thomas in the form of 2 different typefaces, the first is the wild free crazy ‘birdman type’ this is then overlapped via the more serious digital functional type, the drastic difference in the style has been selected to reflect the difference the main character and his alter ego. as. This shows a script that has bee wrote for him but where he has been called BirdMan as his identifier rather than his correct name. In anger at this Riggan has crossed out the name and replaced this will the correct term.
This idea is taken from research into past poster selected by the society, the college style and mix media is popular visual picked. The college visualise the ‘Birdman’ part of Riggan as drawn wings, this shows how this idea of being held back by the role is his own perception rather. The poster allowed see type to cover the actors eyes, this is done as eye are seen as our unique identifier, the most accurately way to identify us, therefore this shows how the ‘birdman’ persona has taken his identity and replaced.
idea 3 - Cross out Style
Script - This ideas comes from the way Riggan is associated as bird man in the industry, this is his nickname and what people use to refer to him as. This shows a script that has bee wrote for him but where he has been called BirdMan as his identifier rather than his correct name. In anger at this Riggan has crossed out the name and replaced this will the correct term.

503 Studio brief 1 - Responsive, LCA Film Society, Film Birdman
Birdman
Storyline -
'This film is a black comedy that tells the story of an actor - famous for portraying an iconic superhero-as he struggles to mount a Broadway play. In the days leading up to opening night, he battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career, and himself.'
'Actor Riggan Thomson is most famous for his movie role from over twenty years ago of the comic book superhero Birdman in the blockbuster movie of the same name and its two equally popular sequels. His association with the role took over his life, where Birdman is more renowned than "Riggan Thomson" the actor. Now past middle age, Riggan is trying to establish himself as a true artist by writing, directing, starring in and co-producing with his best friend Jake what is his Broadway debut, an adaptation of Raymond Carver's story, What We Talk About When We Talk About Love. He is staking his name, what little artistic reputation that comes with that name and his life savings on the project, and as such will do anything needed to make the play a success. As he and Jake go through the process of the previews toward opening night, Riggan runs into several issues: needing to find a replacement for the integral supporting male role the night before the first preview; hiring the talented Broadway name, Mike Shiner, for that role, Mike who ends up being difficult to work with and who may end up overshadowing Riggan in the play; having to deal potentially with a lawsuit based on one of his actions to ensure success; needing to be there for his daughter, Sam, who he has hired to be his production assistant and who has just come out of drug rehab; and pleasing the New York Times critic, Tabitha Dickinson, who wants to use any excuse to give the play a scathing review which in turn would close the show after the opening night performance. But Riggan's biggest problem may be his own insecurities, which are manifested by him constantly hearing what he believes to be the truth from the voice of his Birdman character, who he often battles both internally and externally.'
'Riggan is a man struggling to make his mark in the world. Having achieved fame as "Birdman", he voluntarily walked away from the on screen role, and battled the inner voices that had him believe he was more powerful than anyone could imagine. Old, irrelevant, but still driven, Riggan has chosen to pursue his dream of honoring the man who inspired him over 20 years ago. Riggan and those around him are all facing similar battles, but seem to be unaware of any but their own. Determined to make his play a success, he overcomes obstacle after obstacle in order to ensure it is a success on the stage. Surrounded by his daughter and the actors he's chosen, Riggan works to come to terms with the realities of life. Moments of brutal honesty affect him and those around him. Nearly everyone finds themselves in both positions, of giving and receiving the words they need to hear in that moment. Riggan attempts to let himself truly feel what he needs to so he can find inner peace and freedom. Opening night finds him offering the performance of his life for more reasons than one, and the success of that night will make or break the future of his play. Like everything else, his handling of events is affected by demons only he is aware of'
'Riggan Thomson is an actor who played the famous and iconic superhero "Birdman" over 20 years ago. Now, in his middle-age, he is directing his debut on Broadway, a drama called "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love", an adaptation from a Raymond Carver story. 503 Studio brief 1 - Responsive, LCA Film Society, Brief
For part of responsive we have to partake in at least 2 smaller live briefs, i currently have completely 2 book covers for the Penguin Roundhouse Student Design Competition but as these are both for the same client even-though these outputs are drastically different and the books/briefs are different they still have simailr research and deadlines. Due to the similarities i also want to enter another competition with a different client, this is to produce a wider range of output for my portfolio as well as to create a different brief output than a book cover for this module.
For this the LCA Film Society set briefs every few week for the design of their weekly film posters, these poster are then printed then post around uni as the form of advertisement for the film. Every student can submit design for the films so i am eligible to submit these briefs. On issue with these brief is the brief is very very open, all there available about the brief is the posts on the Facebook site poster explaining which films are shown and when.
The deadline for the posters have not been set but as the poster will need to be produced, print and placed around college the week before the deadline the self set deadline will be a week before, so for the V for Vendetta 24th Feb, Birdman 3rd March.
For this brief i aim to create the poster in a day, the research blogging ect should all be completed in the day. This is to create quick poster design and final copy i can use in my portfolio but also allow more experimental work different design styles outside my comfort zone.To create a piece of design away from concept but based around atheistic.
The output for these briefs need to have high visual impact as the posters will be displayed around college in a very visual busy setting. The posters therefore will need to relay on attracting the audience via their visual style and look, this has to be the main focus of the design development. The poster can taken any style or any idea, there has not been any deadline for size set but as the poster round college are A3 this is the size i will design too.
