404 - Studio brief 1/2 How do you read?/What is a Book? Book Binding Workshop
Booking Binding Workshop
For Design principles 403 i have to create 2 books, for this i will need to research, experiment and use different book binding method so today we had a workshop on 3 simple styles of book binding. The main idea i currently have for my first book is ring binding but this can be done with a plastic binder in the library so we didn't test this method.
(sorry for the low quality image this is a key area i need to work on, we have a photography lighting induction next week where i can learn how to take better images)

All 3 books i made in session |
Saddle Stitch method
Youtube video on method if i forget - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWHkY5jOoqM
-thin binding method
-no much string shown
-easily openable
-full pages seen
Japanese Binding
youtube video link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-r6c_trSxY
-opens from the side
-decorative stitch
-adds detail
-adds interest to plain cover
Concertina/Accordion
youtube video link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YB42IbrwV34
-folds out
-very big
-hard to read
-follows direction well
-interactive
-stands out
-grabs attention
This workshop has been very useful as now i know how to make each of these folds, i can use these in my books for 404 but also for any other personal work. Before this workshop i had no idea how to create a professional looking book now i have 3 different styles i can try. The first two style worked best in my opinion as these where less messy (didn't include glue) which gave a more finished professional looking book as i created less mistakes with them. The Japanese style stitch can be changed and created in different patterns which adds detail to a simple cover, the saddle stitch is desecrate leaving the cover to be the focus also allows all the page to be seen, where as the concertina style might work best for a children book or a book that would only be read at home as very impractical as it follows out massively.

infomation needed-
body text -

Sans serif more legeiable whist fitting the idea of being more modern for a younger audience, also make it seem more casual which will attract the audience more because its informing in a less serious/scary way, text seems less daunting because of the casual curved edge typeface style.
1st text (helvetica) is easier to read because of the higher x height which means it can be read smaller but seem bigger so its still legible, this will also make it easier read from a distance or at a glance. As helvetica also has no theme on its own it makes the text seem unbiased causing it to stay neutral which makes it easier to read as there isn't any defining feature that distract from the meaning and purpose of the text.
Idea of separating the web address and phone number is to make them stand out more against the body of text, is as this is the most important informative part of the text that whist being the main part the audience will look for. If there is any confusion or issues these will be the first things the audience looks for so they need to be visible and clear from the first glance. This uses the same colour scheme and layout style as the front of the leaflet to make it look more cohesive as a document and show the audience direction though the information (theory research). At first the telephone number was just included but this was changed to include both as many students/teenagers prefer to use the web to find information and will have more excess to this source in the digital age, they may be charged for phone calls where the web is free.
more experiments -
'VITAL' has been removed as i received feedback saying this was just too much text, the layout is very text heavy so the design needed to be simplified therefore any un needed information was stripped back.
Setting them out like this gave the audience a chance to see how the layout works in comparison to the front of the leaflet, gives a better setting for the leaflet as it will allow them to see how it will be display in its purpose
feedback -
'information is spelt wrong but i prefer the more simple one'
'the more simple one is easier to read'
'the highlighted information makes me focus on just that, not read the rest'
'its good you have all the details, website looks better bigger'
'looks better without the red as its distracting, theres not direct order of information'
fixes -
feedback-
'costs is spelt costas'
'dominoes is spelt wrong'
these will be changed in the final designs

For the back design the idea was to keep it very simple and the main focus be on just the text, the back would be a lot more text heavy than the front as this style is seen in my research and the audience will be used to turning over the leaflet and having the information on the back because of this it should follow the same design style. I experimented with many different typefaces on the back of the leaflet, theory i have research said that only a few typeface should be used and they should be similar, this influenced my typeface decisions.

-need to get rid of widows and orphans in body text
Idea of separating the web address and phone number is to make them stand out more against the body of text, is as this is the most important informative part of the text that whist being the main part the audience will look for. If there is any confusion or issues these will be the first things the audience looks for so they need to be visible and clear from the first glance. more experiments -

In the first experiment here the image doesn't relate to this page so isn’t needed, just adds more unnecessary detail to the design which becomes because of the colour standing out as its brighter then becomes the focal point so this is dismissed. Also the idea of using helvetica as the body text was dismissed after this design as it seem very compacted, the text looks more complicated than is its and this doesn't work for the tone of voice the leaflet is portraying, so there are more experimented done with the other suitable typeface Gills Sans, this is a more spacious typeface and as i research it found it was created to be legeiable for smaller text on poster ect so is very suitable for my design. ‘gill sans was intended as a display typeface that could be used for posters and advertisements, as well as for the text of documents that need to be clearly legible at small sizes or from a distance, such as book blurbs, timetables and price lists’ This typeface face was created for the purpose of adverts and poster therefore is very suitable for a leaflet aim a an audience that will be associated with this style of graphic design more.
The '£1000' has been tested larger as this is one of the main facts that will persuade the students to buy a license because this is what they will be scared off, i'll collect feedback to see if this works as i'm not sure if it makes the design over complicated.i have also experiment with removing the white background behind the body text, this breaker the layout up into text, title and finishing line as well as gives more contrast between the coloured background and the black body text making it more readable and simpler to focus on therefore this will be use.
'VITAL' has been removed as i received feedback saying this was just too much text, the layout is very text heavy so the design needed to be simplified therefore any un needed information was stripped back.

192 FOOT DOMINOES PIZZA TOWER
11 LARGE BUCKETS OF SMIRNOFF VODKA
3.5 TUBS OF STRONGBOW CIDER
6 SHOPPING TROLLEYS OF POT NOODLE
Set Experiments-
CIDER
PIZZA
VODKA
POT NOODLE
FULL SET
'I think you've really designed for your target well and you can tell they're a cohesive set. 'm not sure how I feel about the bottom part about the to license though, I think there might need to be more space above it'
'Yes I agree, its really strong Beth and you can definitely see how it fits the target audience, the bottom bit I think needs to be more dominant because it is only that bit that actually tells you its about how its a tv license’
'This is actually perfect for uni students because this is what most of them care about! On the pizza one, I'm reading 'TO WER' instead of 'TOWER'. '
'It's so aestheticly nice'
'They do look good. Looks like the "keep calm and Carry on" format'
This was the overall view i had in my crit when i showed the target audience the designs as set, because of this i decide to experiment more with the bottom part of the leaflet. Also the overall feeling was that as ‘or 1 tv licensing fine’ is the main part of the concept this needs to be bigger whilst having more attention drawn too it. The layout changed would changed the shape of the leaflet as now it would be longer to include this need change, i looked back to my secondary reproach and found one of the leaflet was 11.3 cm by 21 cm so i changed the shape to this and played around with the features to create the further developed leaflet design. After i did this i then got more feedback that agree this looked better whilst fitting the idea more as now its clear what the choice is.Also the red used shows danger as it used in warning signs/danger signs mostly which added to the aim of making the leaflet have slightly scary tone of voice which is needed.
Fixes -
tower fix -
selected 4 for the final idea because -
red contrast more against over type colour
fits with simple colour scheme theory
imply danger
no lines included on bottom type to make it stand as separate from above text, less decrotive more serious,
works better as a fuller imager on one side as makes for a full sentence
bright red drabs the attention of the audience show its a warning because this colour is associated with danger/warning signs
FINE is the largest word is the main focal point of the leaflet, this is the important information this make it relvent.
as a set -
feedback -
'Love it like this, much more organised'
'Second one looks like it has a lighter background but apart from that they look better’
'Looks good how the bottom is red, seems more attention grabbing like dangerous'
'Maybe move the pizzas down abit? make it fit the grid better'

Studio Brief 2 - Information Design - Experiment Designs
Simple mock ups for the front of the leaflet design, based on design ideas-
ideas -
one/two sided none folded leaflet will work best
information on one side, title and simple design on the other
type needs to be san serif
capital letters are uses more
modern type faces with larger/different kerning
simple layout
guide the reader via straight forward layout
use imagery but don't relay on it
text main focus
design sketch mock up -
Simple design showing the pizza created by using a large pizza over the different sizes text, the text is different sizes and kerning to allow it to fit in a tower form to reflect the theme of the leaflet. The text is created in a box that gives a lot of white space around to simplify the design reflecting the idea the context is simple.
Overall the feedback i got from these ideas was the the most popular and effective was the 3rd design therefore the next step is to use the elements of this design and play around with different mock up to create the final pizza design which will then become the layout stencil for the other in the design in the set. Create a house style then apply the different context to the leaflet.
these are mockup that were created then a survey was created and asked a group of first year students to select the one they felt was the most readable, direct, legible and which design appeal to them the most-
survey results
colour scheme used
- between 3-5 colour per leaflet only
- can use different shades
- no bright colours more neutrals
- use contrasting colours to draw attention and be legible
- use colours that contrast the background/stand out against it
After the research into the theory of how to create an infographic one the of the key facts was the keep the colour scheme between 3 to 4 colours for each idea. This is why the basic colour scheme here was selected, thought the theory said no to use bright colours i have tried to dull down slightly the shaded used, make them darker but no so dark as its still clear what they represent. It uses the main colour associated with pizza and have the idea to make each of the different leaflet int eh set a different colour so them combine together to create a set more, this will give feeling of harmony between the design as them will match better and come together more. It will also help to define the different leaflets as each will have its own colour scheme that can be experimented with.
created the pizza-
research information decisions
- not the main focus
- simple
- never distract
- multilingual
- universal
the pizza vector was created for this piece as the idea was to have a illustration that was as simple as possible, this would mean it could be uses at all sizes but also wouldn't distract too much from the idea of the leaflet. The main focus wasn't suppose to be the image but what the image was representing, because of this i created my own image that would fill my needs as simple but obvious, also then i had more control over how it looked and how it was formed. this will be the same simple style that i used of all the pictograms in the leaflets.
font -
research information decisions
- legible
- match the style of the communication/tone of voice
- combine similar styles
- simple and clear
- clean and legible font sizes only, if cant be read point less
- less is more
- uses a small amount of type
- use a small amount of typefaces
- make the headline big

Futura is a fully developed geometric sans-serif typeface designed by Paul Renner. Designed in 1927 but commercially released in 1936. The letterforms were designed to be representative of visual elements of the Bauhaus philosophy. It uses strokes of even weight, perfect circles and isosceles triangles as the basis of the shape. It become popular as a typeface in the 20th century and has been widely used in modernism and over movements since then, its seen as one of the most popular san serif fonts uses by many different brands and companies. Futura is used by brands like Absolut vodka, Dominoes Pizza and Red Bull, these are brand aimed at the same target market as this leaflet, this show its a type that appeals to them and is seen as current with is important as the tone of the leaflet needs to be a contemporary modern style. Futura remains one of the most used sans-serif fonts today with no signs of slowing down
