Final Feedback
Today was the final crit for the publication for this brief, due to final mistake with the last version on the book this is now being used as mock up rather than the final final book so this crit will allow any final change to be discus before the production of the final book. Also this will get feedback on the new aspects added to the book since the last feedback session, like the glitter and the photo paper pages.
CRIT FEEDBACK-
glitter -
The glitter was added to the book to hid a glue mistake but also add more interest engaging texture to the cover as before it seem rater plain in comparison to the rest the of design. The feedback from this idea was that it works to hide the mistakes as the audience didn't notice them once covered but more glue needed to be used to attach the glitter to the cover as whilst the book was pass round it quickly lost most of it, therefore on the new book more spraymount will be added. Also it was feed back that this feature might be annoying for the audience as glitter covers them, using more glue will reduce this but it also was felt by someone else that this did indeed reflect the idea festival leave the the audience covered in glitter. ADD MORE SPRAYMOUT BUT KEEP THE GLITTER
tabs-
One important part of the feedback about the photopaper removable sections of the book was that instead of tape used to attach int he imagery photo tabs should be used, these are available online and used heavily in sktech book design as it allowed the user to add in their own images but in more professional style. The current use of tape meant that over time the images wouldn't be stick-able as the tape would lose the stickiness but also it was felt over all the tape aspect of the book give it a less professional cheaply produced look, therefore photo tabs will be used instead for the final book.USE PHOTO TABS INSTEAD
To work on this feedback for the final book clear photo-tabs where bought online, these where then used in replaces of the tape, these are the photos of these experiment -
Overall the tabs do look better and are more functional than the tape,
this as they can be used to remove and add photos more easily whilst
also lasting longer but the asethetical value of the tab is the most
useful benefit. The tabs give the book a more professional feel as the
tape made the book look like it made me hand made but rushed. Also
applying tabs to the book make it more commercial viable as this can be
via a machine where as the tape might have been needed to be added by
hand.
Binding Method
One of the thing that could be changed between now and the final production is the pattern for the bind, this could be changed back to the other design or the design changed as again, this is being thought about as overall currently the cover does appear quite bland comparison to the content of the book. But feedback from this crit stated that the simpleness of the design allowed it be be obvious, the user can see the connection to the tent shapes directly where on the other design this was less clear, it needed to be pointed out to be understood. Therefore this binding pattern will be selected
Price Point
For the crit the price point was decided on, the range at the start was £6-£14 this is taken from research into the average price of book sold in the distribution channel. Feedback from this crit agreed that about £7 was suitable, this was as the book isn't big enough to charge a large amount and as the book would aim to be sold as gift this would be suitable for a cheap gift for someone rather than needing to be a long term investment.
The final crit was overally really positive as it the general feedback was the the book made people want to visit the festival or go to festivals, it fitted the aim of inspiring people to go to the festival as well as showed it reflected in the intended experience. The changes will be applied to the final book.Obe of the negative of the crit was that the book page thickness might have been to thick
The crit feed back that as the production of the book used ideas and concepts taken from the content this allowed the final book to fit the aim of the brief better as it gave the overall final production more contextual depth rather then just ascetically value.

504 - Design Production, A - Z in Content, Price Range/Distribution Channels
Price Range/Distribution Channels
The final publication has now been produced therefore the final decisions about the price range and the distribution channels can now be done, this was left till now as the visual aesthetically quality of the book will effect where and how much it can be sold by.
things that will effect the cost -
price of printing
audience
purpose
where its sold
size
price of prodcution
quailty
hardback cover
different pages/textures in the book
research into books sold at the distribution channels-
To making sure the publication fits in with average price the books at the stores where it will be sold is vital to the sales of the book, this is as if the book is massively more expensive then it competitors the potential audience will pick these instead. The book need to be simailr price to the average price the book sold in the same shops are.
where-
As the book target a northern market as the festival targets northern goers selling the book in and around Leeds will be more relevant. This is as people down south would go the reading festival over leeds this is the northern version of the festival therefor the book will have more northern audience. Most people in and around Leeds know someone or a few people who have been to the festival therefore targeting this area mostly will increase the sales and promote to and audience likly to buy the book.
what type of stores -
From research into photography book and art books it was found the most suitable shop that sold this type of book is Urban Outfitter, Colours May Vary and the Village Book Store. These sell lighthearted books about less functional more aesthetical purposes, where as commercial book stores sell books that have a more purposeful use.
research into prices at these stores - from secondary research at the start of this project the books look at sold at these store ranged from£6-£14
printing/production cost-
The page size of the final book allowed the book to be produced with 40 pages but be printed cheaply as pages managed to fit on a A4 sheet, therefore only 20 sheets of A4 paper stock was used. This made the book drastically cheaper than any other books other people where producing as these need to be printed on A3 paper which double the over all printing cost.Having a smaller book reduced the printing costs therefore should have smaller price point.
The book is mostly printed on matt A4 double sided paper but 3 of the pages included opaque paper stoc with a photo paper printed image attached, these 3 page will effect the overall cost of the book as the use of the different material and the cost of the different materials increased the over all printing costs. The photopaper imagery cost drastically more than the Matt Paper due to its more expensive nature as well as the GFSmith Specialist trans-clear paper stocking being more expensive but these pages add a way the user can personalize the book and give a more interactive experience for the user as the pages can be removed so they are worth the extra cost.
Cover-
In general hardback covered books cost more to produce than soft backs, so as this book has a hardback cover the book will be changed at the price off a book publication rather than a leaflet or zine.
As the purpose of the book it to be bought for a gift for someone else the price point and distribution channels has to reflect this. All the publications researched that sells as gifts range from £6 to £14 but most of these books are larger in size then this publication therefore cost more to be made, this was relatively cheap to make as the pages can fit on A4 sheet of paper, the price point for the book will be £7 to reflect this. This is so the book can be bought for cheap gift for someone without it having to be long term useful investment, books that sell for a larger amount in this genre have more purposeful use then this book with functionally is more humour that actual use therefore cannot charge higher. Also the distribution channel for the book will focus on shops like urban outfitters and village book store situated in the north of the UK, specially Leeds as the target audience for the book is likely to be from these areas.

Time Frame Actuality
At the start of these brief a time frame guide was set, over the course of the project this has drastically been altered, this is due to the time taken to produce the outcome, unplanned issues like the need for a final re-print and redo of the final book.
Even thought this was alter this did give me a way to keep track of where i needed to be, if i was really behind it showed me where i had aims so i released i needed to do more work. It also kept track of when my print slots where, this was really useful as i kept forgetting so in the end i had to to also set an alarm for the print slot incase i forgot on the day.
Over the space of the module i have edited the time frame to fit wit issues and the progress so when is tart the next brief i can still see what needed doing and when for.

504 - Design Production, A - Z in Content, Final Mock up
Final Mock up
This is the final mock up for this brief, form the planning schedule this should be finished for the final brief as this was intended to be the final publication but due to issues highlight here this is not the case. All the parts of the book have been completed in the correct time scale but due to mistake and issues this book will form another mock up but will be shown at the final srti so the peers can grasp an idea of the final book layout/design/style as well as this will allow any final changes highlight in the crit to be added to the final book.
WAS SUPPOSE TO BE FINAL BOOK BUT HAD ISSUES
ISSUES
-the binding was done too far back this meant hat the book has to have additional functional stitches added to allow it to close and open easier as well as to give some support to the book. do the binding closer to the fold/crease, also make the binding tighter to avoid this.
-also the pages where folded by hand using a ruler, this mean that even thought all the pages where equal length when lined up the creases are not in the sam place or straight, this effect the end of the book as all the pages where different length which gave off a messy unprofessional finish which does fit with the idea of the book but wouldn't interest the target audience. use the folding machine in digital print to avoid this

-Also when putting this book together the bookrum was cut too short, this mean that when folded at the corners it left a space, this looks unprofessional as its an incorrectly covered book therefore doesn't fit with the aims of this brief. make sure the bookrum is 3mm longer at the corners and a rules thickness around.
- the glitter inside the book wouldn't stay inside or attach the page or cover, this meant the audience got covered in glitter when the open the book, this cold be good or bad as it can be used as a good point as people leave festival covered in glitter so it expresses the experience and reflect the aim very well but also the audience might find it very annoying. The glitter inside the book need feedback, should hair spray or spray mount be used or tested to allow it to stay inside the book. Ask in crit
all this issues will be avoided with the next production of the book, learn form the mistakes of this final mock up to inform the final outcomes
CRIT FEEDBACK-
FINAL FINAL MOCK UP ISSUES
after completing the last mock up for the crit, the next step was to complete the final book itself, for this all the step needed to be done again, this is what happened with this production of this mock up -
pages printed
then cut (issues)
then alined
then folded (issues)
cover screen printed
book rum applied to grayboard (issues)
holes (not done as too many issues with other stages)
binding (not done as too many issues with other stages)
cut (issues)
all the book in this brief have been cut by hand this is due to past mistakes when pages have been cut down far too small due to the use of a cut machine, therefore cutting by hand it the prefer technique for this book to allow the most accurately cut out and equal page size. This worked fine for most of the pages for this book except 1, the one below which was cut slightly smaller than the other as i slipped whilst cutting. As this page has been cut to small it will need to be re printed for the final book.
Also as this pages were left on the table when being cut one of the pages accidentally got a mark on it, as this page happened to be the white inside pages it will need to be re-printed. This pages need to imitate a formal book page therefore cannot have any mistakes as it will make the whole book seem informal/too casual to sell. reprint this page and keep the pages in a plastic wallet so they don't get damaged again
folded (issues)
When this book was created it was designed to fold at 2.5cm, this is where the crease on the cover is situated but if the fold on the pages is here it means that the pages have to be straight lined up against the the binding edge which wasn't design like this due to feedback and research that states it looked more pleasing with a 3mm gap, also folding can be seen from inside the book which makes it harder to open/read. The cover will need to be changed so the binding crease takes up 2.8cm -3.3 cm so the fold in the pages are hidden, the cover is being changed as seen below there was issues with this anyway, its cheaper to redo the cover than re-print the whole book, as well as all the pages would need to be redesigned as there are set with a margin of 2.5. Overall its more productive to redo the cover than the pages overall for this brief. Change the crease on the cover to 2.8cm -3.3 cm
book rum applied to grayboard (issues)
When starting the final book the cover was done on the final bit of buckram available at the time, this as a smaller section that wanted but would work if pulled tightly. This caused issues when being produced as whilst trying to pull the cover tight over the grayboard it causes the production to be more messy, this got glue accidentally on the cover for both sizes. The nature of the bookcloth os that if glue gets on it leaves marks, therefore the cover couldn't be used for this brief as it would cheap/messy produced which wouldn't fit with the distribution channel style or apple to the target audience. For the final book the area when cutting and applying the glue will need to be very clean and more bookrum will extra space will need to be bought for the final cover so that it doesn't have to be pulled/to make application easier.
THE FINAL FINAL FINAL BOOK will be done again with all the changes in mind, the same majority of printed pages will be used to reduce cost but the pages that need changing will be redone. The cover will be redone on both colours of bookrum as the feedback from the crit preferred the duller colour as they felt it worked better with the colouring of the images. There will be screenprints redone on both materials again and the best version will be picked. The crease on the covers will be changes os the current pages can be used. Glitter will be attached using hair spray. biding will be done closer to the fold. Bookrum cover will be bigger and the application will be done with more time and effort so its perfect for the final cover.
FINAL SIZING CHANGE`
since the feedback mock up created has issues with the folding crease on the pages not matching up with the one on the cover the crease will need to be moved to work with the pages due to final retrains. The pages are cut out so there 2.5cm margin on the left size for binding and then the images are full accurate size 6x4 imagery. To assure the cover fits and work with this size the cover a paper test has been preformed, this is so the size and crease can be altered to fit with the size of the papers easily. This will assure the final book cover is fit for the page size and folding.
first test -
18.5cm x 11.5cm, 2.5cm margin
This test doesn't allow for the same gap around the pages, there is more room at the sides that is at the top/bottom, therefore this size will need to be altered.
19cm x11.5cm, 2.5cm margin
this test has an equal bored around the paper but the folds only match up when the paper is placed at the edge of the cover, this need to be give more room.
19cm x11.5cm, 3cm margin
This is the correct board around the book but also has 5mm so the pages start slightly later than the cover which is effective to give the book a more professional feel.
