503 Studio brief 1 - Responsive, In Cold Blood, Brief

For this module we have to partake in 2 small live briefs, as secret seven the record sleeve design competition i aimed to enter was postponed this year another book cover for the penguin design award scheme will be created. This is due to the positive feedback from the other outcome for this company i feel a successful competitive cover could be designed as well as that the outcome for that brief was a project i've enjoyed whilst felt gave useful piece design which could be included in my portfolio.

As one enter only can be submitted for each category for this design brief either the adult non fiction or the children cover will have to be designed, for penguin only one entry can be submitted for each book but each book can be designed. As i feel illustration isn't a personal strong point yet from existing research and knowledge it's clear  most children book cover involved this style of design to attract the target audience attention's and imagination the more serious adult non fiction cover has been selected.

Cover - In Cold Blood: A True Account of a Multiple Murder and Its Consequences by Truman Capote

The Brief, set by Penguin

‘We are looking for a cover design which breaks boundaries in the same way that the book did. It should be bold, maybe even shocking, yet remain true to the book, reflecting both its literary merit and its chilling content.

Your cover design needs to include all the cover copy supplied and be designed to the specified design template – B format, 198mm high x 129mm wide, spine width 20mm, incorporating all the PENGUIN branding and all additional elements such as the bar code.

What the judges are looking for - We are looking for a striking cover design that is well executed, has an imaginative concept and clearly places the book for its market. While all elements of the jacket need to work together as a cohesive whole, remember that the front cover must be effective on its own and be eye-catching within a crowded bookshop setting. It also needs to be able to work onscreen for digital retailers such as Amazon.

The winning design will need to:
have an imaginative concept and original interpretation of the brief
be competently executed with strong use of typography
    appeal to a contemporary readership
show a good understanding of the marketplace
have a point of difference from the many other book covers it is competing against

Penguin are looking for an book jacket cover for the crime thriller In True Blood that represent both the literally style but also the chilling themes of the storyline. The cover needs to stand out, break rules to shock the audience mimicking the books thrilling content. Penguins aim for a cover that will set the tone for the book via following the same tone of voice, reflect content theme without giving too much away yet needs to be bold enough to grab attention in a busy books store. The book needs to appeal to a contemporary market, the cover need to be redesigned to be more attractive to the younger more modern style of design. The cover need to be the focal point so must work on it's own then the other elements of the jacket must be designed either around this or to work with the cover, but the cover need to work as a individual piece of design. The cover need to be concept heavy, a concept needs to be constructed from the books content to reflect the genre. Although fitting with the genre and distribution place the book cove need to be different for it's competitors. The book need to focus or include type heavily, the type need to be created around the concept or theme yet be striking as to appeal. REFLECT THE TONE, GENRE AND STAND OUT.
