For the idea of this book the pages need to overlap to show the different colour combination, the stock used therefore need to be translucent and coloured, for this the best material to use would either coloured cellophane or coloured acetate. For the book i need the stock that
-is strong/unbreakable (for children uses)
-can be seen through
-reflects CMY (is magenta, yellow and cyan)
-can be flipped/cut easily for the pages
Cellophane Sample
good points -
colour is vivid and strong when over lapped
cheap to buy
thin so will be able to hole punch (bind)
good opacity
even colour spread over sheets
colours mix when over lapped
bad points-
not strong/durable
break/rip easily
doesn't have cyan
Cellophane Experiments
Since the cellophane used here could be bough in cyan but can be bough in blue experiments have been done to see if this will effect the way the mixes work, can more sheets be added or can the layer be changed so that the colour resolutions can still be seen. Can the blue seen in the above image be used instead of cyan? Will the colour mix still work? will this effect the meaning/concept of the book? is there any way around this?
These are the experiments conducted for the cellophane to see if it can used and what order it will be used in if it selected for this book.
As colour acetate is very expensive, hard to source, not available in magenta or cyan for this brief i have tried to add colour to acetate myself, to if can make a colour acetate sample that would be useable. I have experimented with two different ways of adding colour to acetate: sharpie (permanent marker) over the clear acetate and printing digitally on to the acetate sheets. Then i can compare the which style work best for adding the colour to the sheets.
Sharpie Over the Clear Acetate
good points -
cheap to produce
easily to produce/source
has all colour needed
bad points-
uneven coverage
not very see-though compare to other samples
seems messy/unprofessional due to coverage
takes time to produce
has to be done my hand
colours don't mix when over lapped
Printing Digitally on to the Acetate Sheets
good points -
has ever need colour
colour can be changed/altered easily (but need to be reprinted)
even colour coverage
good opacity
smooth feel
accurate colour mixing
bad points
expensive
hard to reprint as need equipment (digital print slot)
hard to cut
gets finger prints on
After looking all the different materials that can be used and spending time trying to make CMY work using the wrong shade of blue for cellophane the outcome is still not fit for this brief as its still not portraying cyan correctly which means the mixes and the colour doesn't fit with the concept so do not explain how CMYK work. Because of this i will look at using the acetate, the version which digital print is used to colour the sheets as this give the most professional and eve coverage to the sheets therefore will look the best in the book. Even with the bad point this sample still fits with the aims of the book the best as the colour can be seen clearly, it can be used by children and it wont break, and the opacity means it it can combined and overlapped to create the accurate colours. This sample is the most accurate as i can make sure the colour used is 100%cyan, 100% magenta and 100%yellow but using the colour setting on the document i print on to the acetate.
USE DIGITALLY PRINTED ACETATE
