Gentlemen of Letters
The gentlemen of letters is a small short documentary set in Dublin, its about the men who create and paint the signs around the city. Its composed of different clips, images and interviews with many different artists that use sign design or typography in their work, from graphic designers to street artists. It showed how the sign painting craft has involved around Dublin to build up a history and set the artists background for the city. It has families of sign creators that work for each part that have recognisable different styles, these can be very suitable little flicks or gradients of texts that make it unique for the different artist. Signs are art, they communicate a message in a way while adding depth and beauty to the typography. The message comes first, the aesthetics come second, they need to get their message across before looking nice as they are made for a purpose. The main focus of the short documentary was the idea of manual signs, these are individually painted with a more human feel, humanity is lost by using clinical perfect signs created on machines. This old hand painted style is slowly coming back as vintage and retro typefaces become more popular, the type last longer and it seen as more reliable. Sign are the first thing we see when we walk into a new village or town, they stand out and set the idea of place. The history of signs painting is important tradition that still uses the same font, techniques and ideas these days, its lasted decades and will be around for many more.
This will link to my project as all the signs are hand painted, traditional and classic typography outputs, this classical english style will link to the typically British time honoured company i picked to rebrand. The style of the old typeface the artists paint maybe a field to look into as i feel its a good way to reflect the company.
