406 Studio Brief 2 - Licence to Print Money, Initial ideas

Initial Ideas Sketches

first ideas mind maps -

initial idea sketches -

As research for this brief suggest that the purpose of the bank note should be too celebrate something retaliated to the country or anything that is not paid enough attention too, for this brief as its not for practical use there was three many ideas based around this concept.
-celebrate something unnoticed or specialised to each country but as world wide currency
-celebrate something the form of advertising
-point out/raise awareness for an issue

These are the design ideas for different version of the note that relate to one of the 3 main concepts, each set of notes is created as a way of expressing celebration but for each one the concept is changed and how its used differs.

404 - Studio Brief 2 - What is a book? Tetley Visit

Tetley Visit

Leeds is home to the tetley which is a new contemporary art space situated in the city centre. It allows a space for family, business ect to have access to an artist space which then can use for their own means, but also host events and has a art gallery space where exhibitions are spaced.

At the moment they are holding a Picture Book Exhibition, this shows work of artist in the form of artist books. They have been designed as pieces of artwork but work functionally as books, this is a display of the beauty of books.

'There is a long tradition of artists employing the crafts and technologies of mainstream publishing to create books which either document their practice or serve as artworks in their own right. Increased access to printing and publishing technologies combined with a renewed interest in the craft and materiality of book-making, has seen the number of artists creating books continue to expand.

Picture Book features a range of UK-based practitioners who take a variety of approaches to producing artists’ books. The common thread between the work on display is a particular focus on the publishing of image-based books, whether an industrially produced compendium of graphic art, a limited edition, hand-bound ‘zine of drawing or photography, or a one-of-a kind, paper-cut tomb so large that it can only be ‘read’ at scheduled performances.'

As for this module  we have to create 2 different forms of books, i visited this exhibition to get a feel of how these books are created, the stock, the bounding, the over all styles. Most of the books where perfect bound on thicker stock which makes the more durable therefore will last longer. Most of the books don't include or focus much on the text which relates to my idea for Studio Brief 2 as i want to create a more illustration style book, therefore seeing these gave me research into have to create a look like that.

one of the book in the exhibition came in a sleeve that seemed a bit like a record sleeve, this idea is one i have been looking at for my book but this shows a perfect example of how it can be produced.

404 - Studio Brief 2 - What is a book? Sleeve Case

Sleeve Case

Recently for this brief i ask a group for feedback on layout experiments for this book, one of the point someone raised was that i could design the book to fit and be keep in a blank record sleeve case. This idea something that i hadn't thought of even though i had looked ta creating the book in the shape and size of a record sleeve, now this is a way that this book can stand out against the rest of the boring similar record sleeve design books.

Record Sleeves come in different sizes, there is 12inch (album) and 7inch (single). They come in all different materials and styles but the two main kind ares glossed card either with a hole in the middle (so the name is readble) or without.

The hole is added to record sleeve so that the name can be read without taking the record out, this makes it easier for people to see what they are opening.

For this book i will look at using a 7inch cover with a hole in, the 7inch cover will be more suitable for a normal sized book as the 12 inch would be rather large which would mean it couldn't be carried easily or read easily, also would stop it fitting on most book shelves or stands which wouldn't be functional. The hole will allow me design a cover where the whole has the title so it can be read without being taken out of the case, the hole will become the main design aspect of the cover and can be used to hid or show different parts of information, it will allow the audeince to see the title through the case.

A record sleeve case will add more engagement to the minimal design of the book as it will be a simple but interesting features, sets it out from the others without having to have flash design. The sleeve is white which fits with the minimal modernist colour scheme that was being looked at, over all this idea fits with my current concept well and will add a protection but also depth to the design.Links a useful aspect (protection of the book) to the content inside the book, it also allows the audience to understand its content without even opening it.

FIT FINAL BOOK IN A SINGLE PLAIN RECORD SLEEVE COVER WITH A HOLE IN FOR THE TITLE, THIS WILL BE A CASE FOR THE BOOK

ISSUES WITH THIS CASE/THING TO THINK ABOUT
stock
The case will completely effect the stock used for this book as the case will mean that the book will have to be very thin to fit inside, this means using a stock that is has a low GSM. I will experiment with fitting sheets of paper into the cover to see how much the case can take but for now the ideas are 80-140 gsm. This will also effect the finish of the a paper as glossy paper doesn't fold as easily as as matt paper does, therefore for this brief i will probably use matt to make sure the bound folded edge will fit in the case.

binding
Since this means the binding needs to be as thin as possible, after taking part on the book binding i learnt that this is probably the easiest and the most economical binding method (for this brief i am on a budget). This type of binding used for look books, booklets, and magazines that have a smaller page count so will fit this brief and sort of book style.  This is thinest method binding that doesn't need to use up any of the page margin therefor will allow it to fit in the case better, it will allow it to slide in and out easier.

404 - Studio Brief 2 - What is a book? Redrawn Experiments

Redrawn Experiments

After changing the content of the book to a book including my drawn version of my favourite record sleeve designs, the important part was to decide on a style for the drawing to make sure it fits with the ideas of this book:
-minimal
-modern
-image heavy
(taken from research into record sleeve design books)

To do this i will research in to illustration styles that i feel would work for these covers and that i can do, but these are a quick few ideas i did during the crit to see if any of the styles  stood out as the most suitable.

After mocking up some small ideas the idea my peers and i thought was the best was the line drawn style, this style could be applied to all the different record sleeves as it versatile and adaptable for the different unique styles of record covers also this fits withe idea of minimal. The theme of line drawing is the most minimal style of illustration that could be applied to the content, therefore we felt that it would be the most suitable.
-can be applied to all the different cover
-minimal style
-easy to add my personal twist
-very popular style
-will highlight the design aspect by showcasing them
-groups the different design styles together as a set

Quick Ideas For Layout

If i select line drawing as the style of illustration to do for the record sleeves an idea i had was to over lap (using acetate/tracing paper) my drawn versions over the original ones, this would allow the audience to interact with the book and add interest to the design in a unique way. This could be done using a selected type of binding to over lap the drawing which would make the book more original as i have never seen this done before. The design would work so that when the drawing its taken away the audience can see the original and this would allow them to appreciate both styles.

FEEDBACK -
'the idea of over lapping the images would work better for a childrens' book'
'if the theme is minimal and modern i don't think the idea of over lapping the drawn and original will work, minimal means simple to stick to the original or the line drawn ones not both'
'yes i totally agree, not both but i'd say the line drawn version will give it more personal different feel cause its less serious and i don't think i've seen stuff like that before'
'keep it simple, line drawings would be a really interesting way to go with it'
'i don't know if line drawing is that modern because its more imperfect but i like the idea, i guess you could make it modern using the layout or something'
'record sleeve covers is coooool'
'its a cool twist on a record sleeve book design which i've seen a hundred times before'
'research illustration style and illustrators before picking one, line drawing is kinda a big section but artist spealise it in'
'don't over lap them its too complicated, keep it simple just like a normal record sleeve design book but with your versions'
'have you thought of displaying it in a record sleeve, you can get plain ones dead easily'

-look at displaying the book in a record sleeve/making it record sleeve size
-don't over lap the drawn and original
-research different types of line drawn illustrations
-keep it simple
-look more at modern design styles
