406 Studio Brief 1 - Secret Seven, David Shillinglaw

David Shillinglaw

"David is a mind adventurer, where the left half of the brain explores the right one. Unanswered, impulsive, instinctive and restless - David doesn’t paint or draw, he creates time. Evident in all his work is that David Shillinglaw is not afraid to humanise his art. He incorporates the perceptual concern of his journey as a man with his own sense of humour. The result is a powerful and fresh interpretation of everyday reality. His art has the appeal of Pop but a friendly, subtle, self effacing Pop that presents the ordinary and delights the viewer when he shows that you have your best conversation with yourself".

-Jaybo Monk

this artist creates work expressing how his brain works/feels at the time, he expresses his version of time as a piece of art work thats vibrant, vivid and expressive. His work follows main different similarities, these include the uses of eye imagery, a common typeface, random mark making techniques, random shapes and other elements with bright colours that combine to create mental expressive art that reflect this personality. The different styles work together via the uses of a simple colour scheme and simple illustrational drawing.

designs sketches

design 1 -

Hand drawn sketch scanned in. The lyrics fro the song have been added around the head fro which included different reference to the song for example, starts to reflect the night sky, tears to reflect the sadness them and eye to reflect the lyrics 'when my eyes are closed'. This cover is made up of different aspect from the song or the research conducted for this brief,  the geometric shapes around the edge come from research into the artists wild humm, the chemical symbol for worry is include inside the brain part of the image to reflect the worry taking over the brain . So far this is the most suitable cover for this brief due to the fact that it is created from all the parts of the research i have done so far, the style of the artists has allowed me to combine them all to created a cover that reflect the whole aspects of worry rather than just one part.  This busy collage is my expressive version of the work i have done for this cover, its a collection of different text and imagery built up to express every aspect i have looked at so far but with a personal less harsh touch due to the fact ti has been hand drawn. the busy composition reflect how worry take over and is a demeaning illness over the brain and how it also effect the surrounds of the suffer, this drawn expand outside the brain to show it effect their everyday life and how it can be a confusing busy mess for them but every part of it makes sense and link to the song.

design 2 -

Since the over cover i felt work so well i created another cover in the same basic style again using all the research i have conducted for this brief to inform the text and illustrations used. The main change in this design is that i have left no room for white space, this is the whole cover of the record is taken over in the same way that the whole thought process of worry suffers is, to reflect how it effect everything all over for them. These cover engage with the audience as every time the audeince looks at them they can notice something different and new,  the imagery is so busy that they can look at any aspect first but it still relate to the song in a way. These cover are a combination of all the research i have done for these brief and this style has allowed me to express all the different version of worry, different effect and different lyrics of the song in one busy imagery that expresses my personal views on worry but doesn't have a over hanging feel of sadness just to the style of illustration used.
This cover has many different hidden aspect which relate to the idea that the song has a hidden meaning whilst reflect the over all emotions of the song without give too much detail of the song away.
