404 - Studio Brief 2 - What is a book? Layout Grid

Layout Grid

basic grid

For this book layout i have created a simple grid for the design that all the pages fit by, the images fit in the squares seen below (one of four) then the text description can fit along any of the lines along side it. The grid is very simple and is based around the text being alined along the edge of the image which links the text and the imagery as they are next to each other.

In the research some books kept the text in the same place and the imagery in the same place on each page then only broke the grid to draw attention to selected pages but as this book only as ten double page spreads, the grid will be common thought out them without changing the size of the of the imagery or the text as the small amount of pages would just make the design look messy/out of place rather than clearly having a grid system built up which has been purposely broken, for this there need to be more pages to have a common style before it is broken. Have a clear grid system and common house style in for all the pages will fit the sleeves better as a set as not one will stand out of an individual, the grid system is very clear and simple to make sure the pages are not overloaded with design as the record sleeve drawings will be complicated/detailed it need to be a balanced out with a minimal layout.

outside lines are the margins for the page
blue box is where the illustrations will go
text can follow any of the other lines in the grid but not over lap the imagery
