406 Studio Brief 2 - Licence to Print Money, China

China

After finding the work of Turo Kase on its nice that, for this project i will look more into Chinese graphic minimal graphic design. This is as i fell i could use this style in the design of my bank note, creating a note that reflects China, its culture and the beauty of its minimalistic design. As a bank note needs to include imagery as well as type but seem asectically pleasing as its for a exhibition brief i feel this style of graphics could create a note that would be suitable.

Also after doing a group crit with my class no one else seems to be interested in Chinese bank notes, even thought this the most populated countries in the world which means Chinese bank notes will have the largest target audience. Because of this a note that celebrates the country, its graphic design as well as its culture which is based heavily around flowers/plants would be subtle for this brief.
China as a country is very proud of its heritage and culture, it wants to promote it as much as possible to its younger generation for this project this could be done via a bank note based around celebrating and promoting its history. As children primary use bank notes more than adults as they can't have credit cards etc so they have cash, this is away of promoting Chinese culture to the younger Chinese audience and keeping traditions alive.

The ten most widely appreciated and culturally significant peony, Chinese herbaceous peony, camellia, azalea, narcissus, chrysanthemum, plum blossom, lotus, Chinese flowering crab apple and orchid. Pine and bamboo are also very popular.

-inspired by Chinese design
-using plants that are related to the countries culture
-largest audience of any bank notes in the world
-heavy want to represent the country/keep culture alive
-children use notes more than adults so this promotes the culture to the younger genartaion

existing note -

These the existing bank notes that china uses, they do include a small image of a lotus flower which shows the country do want to pretty the important flowers in their culture. These have be designer for circulation therefore have to serenity proof, this effects most of the design aspects of the note, as the note for this brief is a one of design it can be created for ascetic purposes only, this gives me freedom to create a design that celebrate the beauty of the culture combined with the modernist design style.

current currency
The official currency in China is the Renminbi (RMB or CNY) or in Chinese "Ren-min-bi". The basic unit is the yuan (also known as "kuai"), which equals 10 jiao (or "mao"), which is then divided into 10 fen. Paper currency comes in 1.2,5,10,50 and 100 yuan notes. Paper jiao come in denominations of 1, 2, and 5. There are also 1 and 2 fen notes, but these are rarely used as they have no purchasing power. 1 yuan, 1 and 5 jiao, and 1, 2, and 5 fen coins are even common used in larger cities.
for this brief design notes for either 5,10,50,100 or 500 (dominator of 5) yuan
1 yuan is 100 fen
1 yuan is 10 jiao
1 jiao is 10 fen
