For the layout of this book there a few ideas taken from research into book of this kind (record sleeve design books) to make this book display the redrawn covers in the best way. The way that other books do it has purpose which is to draw attention to the covers first, the information second this is a key feature this book aims for too, the image needs to be the figure and the text the ground. The text has been selected as the most minimal, simple font style that could be used to make sure it just enhance the image rather than has it our meaning or theme. The book needed a meaningless, themeless typeface that has no associations or strange characteristics that would draw attention away from the covers.
The sleeves have been redrawn in the same style and paired up so they will fit together as double page spread to make the book easily to read and to make the pages flow. Since all the imagery used in this book is ver different the aim of the layout is to make the book read easily, seem like a set of grouped imager, flow from one double page to another, have a consistent style/size of text, display the covers so they attract the most attention, use white space to make sure the book isn't too busy or over powering.
Aims for Layout
-minimal design
-white space around the imagery
-text situated next to the imagery to explain
-every page includes a description
-all covers the same size
-very simple text to not distract from covers
-very minimal
-white and black to match all style/colour schemes
-very modern/digital to contrast with the handrawn style of imagery
-records on in the in different space on each page but still flows a grid system
-text close to imagery to show its a description
-focal point is the covers
-use one typeface/typesize
Large image takes up most of the page with text in the grid next to it, simple yet direct, easy to read and understand, experiment with smaller images which will give more whitespace to the background, this is a feature of the designs i research therefore might enhance the layout of the page.
test with the image sized changed drastically smaller, to see if the smaller cover but bigger text makes for a more balanced page, this page seem very bottom heavy as all the detail is down one side.
The text is too distracting this size and the detail is lost in some of the image due to the scale.
Smaller image is used which still makes the image slight too detailed and compact but the text is moved around the page to see if having it at the top balances out the design of the page more, to see if the text being alined at different sides gives an edge feel or if it just make it harder for the audience to read. Have the text in the middle of the page like on the bottom experiment causes the text to stand out as odd because without the grid it doesn't seem to be alined against any part of the design therefore looks odd which draw attention to the text not the image,
TOO SMALL
TEXT NEEDS A GRID/LINE TO FOLLOW
Changed the size of the image back to bigger so the detailed in the sketch is seen more clearly, this makes the drawing look less swashed and therefore more clear, making the sketch clearer can hight light the detail in the design and what makes the design successful. Using smaller text that is alined together is more effective as it simper, the text needs to blend into the background as much as possible therefore the design and order of it need to be as elementary as possible.Image being this size is very full on which is good and bad as it too busy for the page as the detail in the drawing need more white space to balance it out to make the design seem calmer.
TOO BIG
Added a title to the pages to see if this would make the pages see more engaging for the audience by not showing an overly powerful image but using text as part of the design aspect. This was just an experiment as i don't think a title or text this size is needed for this style of book but as it seen in my book research i thought i would test it to see if it suited the ideas but feel its too overloaded the design. The text font is very minimal and the design do still include a large amount of white space but it feel the focal point is lost and the attention is just going to the title rather that the image.
this mock up proves that if titles are added to the pages when they are a double page spread the design seems too swapped, the focus is just on the text and this distract from the concept of the book
NO BIG TITLE TEXT
This design goes back to the very minimal approach to design, stripping back to the only need information and imagery with no elements being decorative but just celebrating the beauty of effortless design.
SIMPLE WORKS BEST
In the editorial page research conducted boxes where added to text to keep with the theme of minimalism and modern styles are square boxes are a way of adding detail but its the most simple indirect detail that could be added. It added a design feature but not one that is too overpowering to make the design to busy but as its around the text it draws too much attention to the text rather than the images, try around images.
