For this brief we have to create a piece of work to give to first years next years to help them with the issues we faced this year, to do this and to apple tit his target audience the pieces need to have few many features
-lighthearted (don't worry or scare them)
-use humour to engage
-use language that is not to serious, keep it so they can relate it to their lives
-positive, can't make them want to drop out
-use design style like modernism to relict the theme of the course/what they will learn
-be useful, it need to have purpose
-cant promote any negative issues towards health
-need to be safe
Durring fresher week i received bags and bags full of leaflets, poster and adverts. Most these were binned as they had no practical use expect advertising event or gigs or places, but there was load of thing that i keep as they had useful information i could relate too inside or free stuff or they made me laugh. These are the reason that student will be attracted to piece of design, every student loves free stuff or helpful advice or funny things, this will be the basic for the idea i created for this brief as i will nee my piece of work to stick to these ideas to target this audience.
FUNNY
RELATABLE
USEFUL
FREE
From all the free things i received at fresher fairs the main objects i still keep
-lighter with club branding on
-posters on the wall in my flat
-bottle opener
-bbq sauces
-glass with branding on
-book of offers
-book of cocktails recipes
-neck chain for keys
-playing cards
After fresher is now mouths ago, i have been though my room and flat to see the stuff that i still use/have i got given in freshers week, this is analyse why i have kept it, why i kept this stuff and binned the rest, what made these items stand out?
PRACTICAL USE
it was made clear to be me when i look at all these items that the reason i have kept these things is because they all have a use or are things i use, fresher only keep thing if they have practical reason too otherwise it gets thrown out with all the other rubbish but as for any age its hard to art with something when it has a use or you use it, if the user has a reason it could be used or a reason to keep it them will but over time the useless part are bin end due to decluttering, student rooms aren't that big on average so the stuff that student keep are the things they actually use over everything else, even the funny things get binned after a few month but useful stuff stays .
-final outcome must be useful!!
-must be a reason the audience keep it
IDEAS
-hangover book
book that gives help to hungover people, informs they how to deal with hangover
gives them hangover cures for experience of second years
PRACTICAL USE -helps hungover people deal with the pain/advice
-anti stress posters
positive poster that help student relax and destress, cheesy posters that the audience can use to decorate their rooms but also help they not to stress as stress isn't good for health and first year is very stressful.
PRACTICAL USE -brighten up boring/dull student halls, give good vibes
-nap guide
a document that teaches student how to nap effectively, how to use naps productively, what food help sleep and how to sleep better in general. Shows the effect of tiredness and leak of sleep via image overlapped with the effects. promotes sleep
PRACTICAL USE - advice on how to nap, sleep advice to help student sleep properly
-daily offers book
book that shows where and what offers student can get in leeds daily, shows what days each week place in less have elected offers on for student and how they can take advantage of these.
PRACTICAL USE - helps student go out but also save money
-posters about type/type puns
poster set using graphic design rules and jokes, makes the audience leaner graphic thought the poster as they will understand the jokes
PRACTICAL USE - teaches stuff about graphics
FEEDBACK ON IDEA
'be careful the idea of hangover doesn't promote binge drinking'
'the offers one if cool but what fi the offers change cause they do quite quickly'
'the poster doesn't seem to have much physical use, and they might be too cheesy'
'hangover over cures ooh would be useful but not to medically'
'anti stress poster shave been done before and by a few people in the class for this brief, its not very original. try adding a personal twist'
'the hangover book suits you, your hangover are awful'
'naps are needed but are they really productive? student sleep too much is already a stereotype'
'i'd use the daily offers book but in fresher you device so many different offers how would it stand out'
After reflecting back on feedback and think about m experience of this year, the idea that is most relevant is the hangover cures book.As this was pointed out when i asked for feedback the hangover i get ar awful and if i can help anyone even myself avoid them via the form of a research book into the cures the book will be successful. This is also a issues that i heard people complaints about a lot in uni or outside, students do drink a lot and therefore get hangovers a lot but this waste time and has very negative effect on the body system. The book all aim to help people find their own cures but also see a group of other peoples so they can try and save themselves, it gives a personal touch to this brief as its something that i would personal use. The book revived over all positive feedback and currently this feels the more suitable response to this brief as i was very ill and know a few people who where during first year due to the alcohol intake.
Gap in the Market
The main way this is dealt with via the government is on the NHS website but this is very clinical system that just advices less drinking, thought this would stop hangovers this isn't a practical thing tat student would do as i know from personal experience that most student drink to excess. The current system deal with the issue by just telling them top stop rather than excepting that this won't happen so helping with the solution.
information from the NHS website |
This project will help an audience that does drink deal with the consequences, help them get better and reduce stress/paint to it targets audience, this will give the book a practical use as there aren't any other document of this style available easily. It gives the book a aim to help people but also keeping the style, audience, state of the audience (hungover) and mind set (they won't stop drinking) to influence the design. the book won't promote drink in abuse but will help a already existing issue.
DONT PROMOTE DRINKING BUT HELP WITHT EH SIDE EFFECT, REDUCES PAIN FOR AUDIENCE WHICH GIVE A PRACTICAL USE WHIC RELATE TO THE MAIN AIM (REASON I KEEP THE STUFF FRO FRESHERS)
