503 Studio brief 1 - Responsive, To Kill a Mockingbird Target Audience Research/Redesigned Covers

Target Audience Research

'The cover should feel timeless and confident, and appeal to a whole new generation of readers.'
via Penguin Brief

This is the only information given about the target audience of the book cover design from Penguin. The cover has to appeal and sell the book to a whole new generation of reader, these implies that the cover must sell to the younger generations but due to the hardness/reading level of the book this audience will still be adult but rather young adults.

The book is famous title that was released in 1960 when it quickly became a very popular book as at one point it over sold the bible but this generation has passed, now the book is associated with the 1960 and seen as old. To make the cover appeal to target market set by the competition it must almost rebrand the book with a twist on the modern classic.

The original to kill a mockingbird cover is very ambiguous but reflect heavily the decade it was produced in, the bright contrasting colour scheme and bold block prints strongly relate to themes of the 1960's. To design 'timeless' cover asked for by the brief the outcome must make sure that it doesn't follow any current or past design trend or themes that would express the year it produced in but instead uses design aspects that have last over the years from over classic book covers. To see how to create a design of this style research into classic books and their redesigns will show how these books are modernised by other designer in a way to make them appeal more to the same target market as this brief.  Many other modern classic book have been redesigned over the years to help them appeal to the same younger audience, to help give the classical book a more modern most of these designs will take advantage of media, new print techniques or any other new features to create designs that where not possible at the time of the book publication to modernise the books feel.

redesign a book is done to make ti look more relent to the current market, to make it seem less old fashioned.

This book cover has ben recreated using embroidered material or the cover, this is made possible now by the way embroidery can be now be easily created by machine over and over again to create the same design where as this would have been time consuming/expensive/imperfect by when the book was first released by Penguin. The style is made more modern via the less formal, illustration style of the cover, which implies  the book is less hard to read, this is due to the cover being amore welcoming drawing rather than the sever first cover.  Creating the book to appear less serious aims to attract the target audience more the target market who read for pleasure but might not want to be challenged via the language.
