505 Design Practise 2 - Studio Brief 2 - Stereotype of a Feminist

Stereotype of a Feminist

'Pat Robertson once described feminism as “a socialist, anti-family, political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism, and become lesbians.”'

'A more systematic investigation into what people think about feminists found that many people think that feminists are ugly, uptight, angry, aggressive, harsh, strident, demanding, dogmatic, man-hating lesbians… or think other people think they are. Only 26 percent of people say that feminist is a positive term.'

isn't a new view-

This article explore how this idea of the negative association with positive female right movements in't a new idea, to stereotype therefor dismiss and negatively apply implication to equality supports as this was also done for the original feminist the suffragette movements.

The idea of be-littleing and creating negative stereotype for the movement allowed less women to want to tie themselves with the label due to the stigma, yet now after the moment has been passed the general public would now look back at these women in a very positive style, as a positive representation of protest. Will this shift in media/views be mimicked for now-a-days feminist?

YouGov Survey

-82% believe in equality yet only 23% believed they where feminist, this is what a feminist is
-7% think men class them selves as feminist
-30% think being a feminist has negative connotations

This survey shows that feminism is massively seen as a negative concept or in a bad way but the general public, yet this is probably due to the correct meaning not being understood or the menaing being misinterpreted. The result of this survey show that most people asked think that most men do not consider themselves feminist, this reflects either of two believes; 1. that most men either do not understand what this therefore do not realize they are a feminist, or 2. the believe men are can not be feminists.

Unfortunately, feminists often face (false) stereotypes, including:
Feminists hate men.
Feminists are angry.
Feminists are unattractive and not feminine.
All feminists are lesbians. Feminists are all pro-choice.
If you are a feminist, you cannot be religious.
All feminists are career women and do not support stay-at-home moms.
Feminists are Bra- Burners who hate sex.
Feminists can only be women. Feminists don’t believe in marriage

'Only women can be Feminists."
"Feminists think they are superior to men."
"Feminists are Man-Haters because they're all lesbians."
"You're a Feminist? But you're not white!"
"Feminists only want gender equality."

CURRENT VISUAL RESEARCH RELATING TO THIS-

Campaign trying to show how feminism is about equality and feminists can be male. Bold contrasting colour scheme which drawn attention but due to colour scheme does still imply gender roles which is a area feminist fights againt

Illustration showing how feminism isn't about not being sexy or not wearing what you want but about revolting for the rights. Expresses the idea in a illustrative way using type but again his just focuses on women

Campaign showing the most googled searches related to women, this visually shows the audience what the issue is and then represent feminism as the solution correctly. This is bold, clear and direct whilst informing the audience to the need but also does focus heavily on women which is why its seen as 'womens' issue.

This is a campaign which mocks informative school book style design as in way to portray the information express as factual. The aim is to make the content depicted seen and taken in by the audience as fact. This is also done by using correct historical fact content along side therefor seems more reliable source. The style of design is simple yet very readable and uses imagery to fit with the stereotype content. The idea of this campaign is to brand third wave feminist as to blame the patriarchy

Imagery used to express the stereotype, used negatively to promote the misconception. The type style is mimicking pin up girl styles, the aim is to portray all women that believing in this view as the fitting the states stereotype. This shows the issue and what need to be changed.

The aim of this poster is to combat peoples opinions on what a feminist is as showing the stereotype combined with the correct explanation yet due to the soft pink background and the white lower case softer letters this design style still targets and represents a more female audience. Another issue with this poster is due to the smaller type at bottom means it might not always be readable or red therefore just reinforcing the association with the stereotype.
