504 - Design Production, A - Z in Content, Book Binding

Book Binding

idea 1
durable book, waterproof hardback cover, strong binding, style of a photo album, pages attached strongly.

idea 2
cheap, easily mass produced book that doesn't last long, no durable, disposable style guidebook that would break, simple non decorative made for purpose not look.

FEATURES-
can it be mass produced?
string is seen on tents and used heavily at festivals therefor including this will link
How long does it last?
Can it be done on hardback cover?
Decorative or functional?
Manually done? (not reflect the manual hand made nature seen in heavy in the imagery)

experimented with the most suitbale ideas to create a book to find out which would work best, do this with blank pages as a mock up.

  Long Stitch Binding
The longstitch binding method is one of the most simple bookbinding techniques, it requires no glue, can look as equally rustic as it can professional and offers durable binding strength. The technique involves sewing the signatures direct to the cover. This style of binding adds a more decorative technique to a simpler book cover design and can be done on hard back or paper back book covers.  The stitch can be as artistic or basic as intent by the designer, it could a durable binding method used to attach a hardback cover to this project in a decorative way that adds to the aesthetical appeal of the book to help adda degree of maturity to the simpler book idea. Allow full page view. This is a hand stitched method of binding, it needs to be done individually therefore cannot be mass produced but could there are similar ways of doing this stitch using mass production techniques which would be used f the book was being commercially printed, this techniques will need to be down by hand which would also increase the piece of the final outcome. Japanese/Stab Stitch
This is useful for binding single sheets of paper. It can have either a soft back or hard back cover which attaches to the text block with decorative stitching along the spine. Another option  using this decorative sewing technique around the outside to expose a interesting pattern . It is recommended to use Japanese style binding for large or landscape format books as the binding requires a large margin. As this style can use for hardback book cover it will work for the idea of a durable book, this method also produced a book where the pages are very attach with add to the concept of the book. For this brief an idea is to display the book as a photo album style advice publication, from the book binding session this book seem the most accurate representation of this design due to the the landscape format and the way the pages open so they can be flat and fully view.  This is a hand stitched method of binding, it needs to be done individually therefore cannot be mass produced but could there are similar ways of doing this stitch using mass production techniques which would be used f the book was being commercially printed, this techniques will need to be down by hand which would also increase the piece of the final outcome. CAN HAVE AS MANY PAGES AS WANTED DUE TO JUST SEWN IN

wholes on hard back have to be drilled in
crease down the side near the binding allows full pages to be opened

-durable
-decorative
-landscape
-hardback covers

Unknown Binding 1

IDEA 2

 Hardback Verison Unknown Binding 1

IDEA 1

Saddle Stitch
This is probably the easiest and the most economical binding method, cheapest to do as needs only a few materials. Pages are folded, creased and stapled/sewn together in the middle . This often see this type of binding used for lookbooks, booklets, and magazines that have a smaller page count. This binding would be appropriate for the cheaper publication for this brief (the guide that is designed to be taken to the festival/ represent the disposability via only lasting a weekend) this is as its the simplest least decorative binding method whilst easily breakable.  IDEA 2.

-cheap
-easy
-breaks easy
-no strong
-can be mass produced

experiment
In a book binding session experiment where made with this style of binding and how to do the application a hardback cover, this increase the durability of the book as the cover is stronger and waterproof but it also would increase the cost as well as contrast the idea of this concept of the book therefore it wouldn't be suitable for this idea.

Concertina
This is the only book constructed without a single stitch. The book is a folded structure made via the folding of the page in the intended direction, this means the whole book is one long piece of paper folded. The book block is made by simply folding a sheet of paper back and forth in page-width increments. This style of binding can be used in many clever ways. Traditionally used for pop-up or flap books, concertina binding can be used to reflect a time line or story. This links to the idea of expressing the festival as a weekend experience, this could be used to dhow the experience as a time frame but its very hard to traditional read as guide as its very long and messy to fold back, also it can be easily ripped as its very delicate construction that relies souly on the gsm of the paper. Also its very expensive to produce for this brief as the paper will have to be very long length, it was being mass produced many could be taken from the length to reduce cost but this viable for this brief of one book.
IDEA 1/2

-hard/awkward to use
-hard/awkward to read
-reflects a story/time frame
- costly to produce one

Coptic Binding
A non-adhesive form of binding that stems from bookbinding methods employed by ancient Egyptians. Most secure binding method. Signatures are sewn through their folds, and attached to one another and again sewn through two loose covered boards with a chain like stitch across the spine. This is a more hand made delicate design of wire binding, the inspiration before this method was created. As this method is the most secure binding style it applied to the Idea 1 as it would last the festival over year periods without damage, also it can be uses to apply hardback cover. It shows the stitch detail on the outside which link tot the use of strings for tents at the festival. ISSUE- hard to apply a hardcover, and although it looks visually pleasing the spine is left exposed therefore
This is a hand stitched method of binding, it needs to be done individually therefore cannot be mass produced but could there are similar ways of doing this stitch using mass production techniques which would be used f the book was being commercially printed, this techniques will need to be down by hand which would also increase the piece of the final outcome. IDEA 1. HAVE TO WORK OUT PAGES NUBER AS DONE IN SIGNTURES OF SHEETS.

experiment
As this technique was the most secure binding technique available a test production book was made, this was o see how hard this book was to produce and also to learn about factors that could effect the final book. The main issue that was highlighted was IT VERY HARD TO PRODUE A BOOK IN THIS STYLE WITH A HARDBACK COVER, it not very easily to do and was classed as too hard for student to do therefore we only learn this style with a paperback cover. This would mean the cover wasn't waterproof or couldn't protect the book from any damage, therefore this method isn't very suitable for concept.

Spiral Binding
This style is document throughout school or university using one of these methods. Holes are punched through the pages of your document near the bound edge, and held together using either wire or plastic coils. Its the basic binding method used for guidebooks but its not very durable as the pages can easily be ripped out due to having close holes already punched in them. This method can be easily mass produced so unlike the other hand stitched binding methods could be done if the book was mass produced, also allows full page view. This cheap binding method is uses in book aimed at a younger audience which the idea 2 appeals too more, it a more informal style of guide book which the binding represents as its used in informative function books mostly. Also the plastic binding could be use to link to the concept of disposability as it this material is uses for most disposable object including the camera media uses to take the photos.  IDEA 2.

-cheap
-easy to mass produce
-disposable
-plastic
-represents informative book
-uses in book that targets a younger audience

IDEA
the binding method that seemed to work best for the concept of idea 1 for the book was the Japanese binding on an hardback book, this is due to the layout of the pages and they way its the most long lasting binding that can work for this type of cover. The cover as a hard back can be coated in book-rim which water proof, strong, stain resistant therefore would hbe perfect for the use in this project to create a long lasting non damaging cover for the book.
