Hard Back cover test 1
This is the firs binding test on book-rum and hardback cover, this has been done to see how this selected binding is done on the selected material, how to construct the book using the intent binding method. his workshop showed how when creating a book in this style the front cover need to have 5mm 2cm in missing, this is to allow for the crease of the page to be folded so the pages can be viewed fully. This is a vital feature that will need to be done in the final copy so the pages can be open up.
LEAVE 5MM CUT OUT FOR THE CREASE ON THE FRONT PAGE
Even thought the book folded better using the front cover with a cut out crease, an issues was when the pages where folded once the book was constructed it was hard to open them fully or produced a nice neat professional crease. The book cannot be folded using the folding machine as its already been constructed, therefore the next book will use the folding machine to make the pages more open.
TEST WITH FOLDING MACHINE BEFORE CONSTRUCTION
Soft Cover, Folded with folding machine
This is a similar book mock up produced on just normal stock and paper cover, the experiment was to see how the folding machine worked on the paper stock and to see how to use it, an aim with using the machine was to see if the pages could open fully and easier if they had been fold via this medium. The overall effect was that the pages could be opened more, the content been seen easier due tot his, it was easier for the audience to flick thought the book once the pages have already been folded in this manner as they don't have to created/put pressure on the create a crease.
here compared to the other book its clear the pages are bent cleaner and more efficiently so the pages can open wider, this meant moer of the page can been seen and the book is easier to turn.
On this mock up the back was also creased, this mean the back page could be opened fully too, this will be experimented with as it makes it less clear which why the book open whilst also making the book less strong due to the two creases rather opposed to the single crease on the cover
On the hardback cover part of the cover has to be taken out for the book to be creased so it opens fully from the front, this weakens the front cover due to the missing grey-board section. The solid form of the book comes from the back cover in this case, this solid cover link to the concept of the book being durable but experiments will be done to see if having a back cover can still be solid but also allow for full open flat view seen here.
TEST BACK CREASE ON HARDBOARD COVER TOO
benefits of folidng machine
-easier to open
-easier to read
-easier to flick through
-more professional finish
-more page view
-pages open wider
Decorative Binding, Hard Cover, with inside cover and folded using machine
This experiment as been conducted to see how to create a more detailed binding pattern design on a hardback book, to see if there was any issues with the material background or with other decorative binding style as well as too how to create this style by hand. This design add more detail to the otherwise simplistic cover, this feature also aims to add a element to the book which will create a more interesting eye catching book making it stand out as most books don't have a decorative style binding like this one. The shapes have been taken from tent shapes at the festival along with the pattens seen around and inside the arena tents. All the tent seen are triangular shaped, a few idea for the pattern have been designed around this, allowing the book to be influenced even more by the festival atmosphere and shapes/seen at the festival. The design will be shows to get feedback on which the audience feel is more engaging, all the patterns use triangular shapes based around tent shapes to link better to the idea of guide rope and the festival vibe.
triangular inspiration -
Another idea for the binding pattern is to take inspiration/design idea from the shapes of the main stage of the festival, this is the main attraction and one of the main places to visit the festival, the festival/arena style is built around as it's where the biggest bands/headliners play. Due to the popularity of this stage most the Leed Fest Visitors (the target audience) or people who have seen photos/imagery of the festival will recognize the stage therefore this inspired parts of the design via the shape/form.
pattern designs -
Normal book binding string was used for this book to see how to create a pattern, the focus of the experiment was to see how to do these decorative effect on a book in the intended material.Even though the holes messed up slightly, the over all pattern worked well to create a secure binding that was aesethically pleasing as well as functional and fitting with the concept of creating a durable book. The mock up was success for the binding method but not for the side cover or the string or for the needle used but creating this experiment allowed these issues to be pointed out.
An issues with this mock up is that a too thick needle was used, first the cover is drilled into to create the hole to thread up but the needle was thicker than the holes so when threaded up it caused the cover/book-rum to be ripped. This left marks as well as an unprofessional finish on the cover as t seem cheaply/rushed, to avoid this effect in the future a thinner needle will be used or a bigger drill bit.
issues - ripped caused by thick needle
pages can be opened fully due to the use of the folding machine
This mock up was created with the correct stock for the inside pages as well as was an experiment for the inside cover, this has be analyzed more in a different post but issues where caused but the crease size and the material used for the inside cover as it ripped, seen here.
-use thinner needle
-drill holes with thick drill
-use thinner paper for the inside pages
-easy to create this binding style
-decorative binding add more personal/handmade feel to the cover
-use more contrasting colour scheme to make pattern stand out more
Decorative Binding using selected String , Hard Cover, with inside cover and folded using machine
After the issues with the needle in the last design meant the finish to the decorative binding was lost due to the messy holes, this mock up was created using the intended string to see if the thinner string effected the difficulty of production or see if it made a less stable book. The string is bright neon orange to fit with the colour scheme as well as reflect guid rope style string, creating the book also allowed to see if the colour of the string worked or contrasted badly with the book cover material. The colour scheme works well due to the contrast but also neither of the colour are too over powering as the orange is only seen slightly, using a string that contrast with the material of the cover made this mock up decorative pattern stand out more than the above mock up. THE STRING IS USEABE :)
this material gets dirty easily and will not remove, make sure its kept in a clean area
more detailed pattern, based of the shaped seen in the research. this was harder to make and took more time but produced a more unique, creative, festively outcome.
pages can be opened fully due to the use of the folding machine
-use folding machine
-can use the neon strong
-more complex pattern looks more delicate/mature
-double up the string
-can see the inside cover pages
