main idea for stock choice

biodegradable
For this brief it has been suggested in the last crit that a book is created that represents the disposable cheap aspect of the festival experience, like the cameras use to capture the content most things people take to a festival are items they will only use/last for the weekend. For experience most people leave tents, sleeping bag, clothes ect almost everything they take with them, this is as most things are cheap items bought souly for the purpose of the festival weekend and they have no intent in taking them back due to how awkward or how ruined they get. Festival mud covers almost everything therefore its not worth taking items. Due to this for the stock of the book i'm investigating using biodegradable paper, this is so that the book can be left but it does no harm to the environment when left. This stock can express the same disposable aspect seen in the items of the festival as it will only last the weekend but it doesn't add the amount of rubbish left with damages the environmental area when the festival is over.
benefits for biodegradable paper
-represents the experience as only last a weekend
-won't damage the environment if its left at the festival
-doesn't add the the waste left when the festival is over
disadvantages of biodegradable paper
-hard to source
-might be expensive compared to normal paper which will add to the final price, this will make it harder to sell to a younger skint student target audience
-won't be durable , therefore might not even last the weekend (no rain/mud/wind proof. it rains a lot at the festival)
-might rip/tear easily
-won't be glossy therefore will not reflect a benefit of disposable photography or will link to this media
-will it work on the printers at uni?
Stock Available
BIODEGRADABLE TISSUE PAPER
Biodegradable paper was very hard to find in paper sheets, most of the items available are toilet tissue or boxes, biodegradable tissue paper was the only stock that could be found in a useable size but due to the nature of tissue paper it's very thin so although it is possible to print on to it the outcome are terrible quality images, this means the text wouldn't be readable or the photos have the disposable camera effects that are crucial to the concept . The Internet proved this as these are images photographic images printed on the material -
the images are blotchy and patchy as the material does absorb the ink well, therefore this media is no suitable. Also as a book the paper would rip very very easily due to the gsm of the paper which would effect the readable of the book as the audience wouldn't be able to turn pages easily, therefore as the book purpose is to inform if the audience cannot read or turn the pages it makes the book useless.
SEED PAPER
The main type of biodegradable paper that was seen online was this seed paper, this company is situated in america therefore cannot ship to this country but looking at this stock would allow me to see what paper could be use if this was for a commercially printed brief the paper could be imported.
The paper produced by this company is paper that once used can be planted to grow into a plan/herb/tree. This paper has seeds inside the material, therefore once exposed to environmental setting like water/soil will grow this makes the paper biodegradable.
There no waste at all caused by this paper therefore this wouldn't add to the messy left after the festival it would help the ground regrow and recover after the festival therefore would be suitable for this stock idea if it was assessable in small amount for this brief. This paper can be found in a range of colours so even tho this book will use white so that it represents old photo album style design it could use different colour for different pages but this doesn't relate to this brief. Th paper comes in a good size so 6x4 paper could be printed which relates to the size of the book created for this brief.
Both of these paper types cannot be used for this brief for selected reasons, cause of this i'm going to contact G F SMITH a paper merchant company to see if they made any biodegradable paper or are looking into creating any paper that could be used for this brief.
G F SMITH
'To whom this many concern,
I am freelance Graphic Designer operating in the Leeds area, for an upcoming brief I have been commissioned to produce an festival guide that could be used and taken physically to the festival. Due to the disposable nature of what I am designing, I am interested in using biodegradable stock, benefiting the environment when the said publication is discarded.
As I have used GFSmith stocks before in my practice, I would be interesting to know what Biodegradable (or other relevant) stocks you have available?
Thank you in advance,
Kind regards,
Bethany Fitton'
An issues with this paper is that is the audience wanted to reuse the book they couldn't as it wouldn't last that long due to the degrading paper and at festival people have to buy things that will cope with any weather style or any damages. As people buy waterproofs thing for a festival due to rain, this could inform the paper choice as the cover or the book could be waterproof or come in water proof case. Using a strong stock to represent how stuff at the festival has to deal with mud, rain and spills or even fire (some camps have camp fires). Durable paper stock would also make the book last longer, this is so that if the owner wanted to go to the festival for many years they could use it over and over again as a guide before they go, it would last longer as publication.
advantages of durable material
-could be taken to the festival
-would last years
-could be past down
-reflect the feel physical feel of things at the festival eg waterproofs
disadvantages of durable material
-expensive to source, these cost would have to be passed on to the user so large final price
-fireproofing is dangerous to do
-might create a heavy book
-will it work on the printers at uni?
MIGHT WORK BEST FOR THE COVER? OR A CASE
FEEDBACK
would you rather have a book that has biodegradable paper so it could be taken to the festival or reflect the festival more or a more durable strong publication that could last years?
'I'd rather have a book i could use for years as i wouldn't take it to a festival with me, i'd keep it at home to us for the next time i go so i'd want a more durable paper stock that lasted'
'both are good in different ways, disposable is aimed as purchasing for a self but a durable would be better as a gift, more serious'
'both books target the a same audience but through different distribution, one as gift one as for advice, due to different purpose'

cheap
Using a cheap stock for the book is another way for representing the disposable aspect of the festival, the items use/bought at a festival are usually cheap tacky item. All the shops there use cheap advertising stands, cheap signs ect and most of the imagery taken reflect the cheap nature most thing seen at the festival. This is as the items aren't created to last longer than the weekend or have any other use therefore they will be binned so the audience doesn't want to waste a large amount of money on these items.Using a thinner stock that reflect the cheap nature of everything at the festival might summarise the experience as a whole more by appeal to the audience via touch as well as look. This could also have a functional aspect as it would allow the book to be produced for a smaller cost, which would mean it could cost less as the final object for the market. This addresses the target audience demands as it would be better to produced a cheaper book aimed at market of students/adults who many not be able to spend over a selected amount on a book. Book with a lower gsm sometimes do it for a purpose for example 'the book of us' used a lower count so that the audience could add photos in to the book without increasing the size drastically, so that it could still fit on a shelf but this also gave the book a more informal nature as it look less professionally made, it targeted a more informal, younger audience by using a cheaper stock that they would associate with what they could afford, it was still useable but it was light to carry and allowed the audience in interact with it this is something that can be uses in this brief. Most items at a festival get some sort of damage or break, most cheap paper stock would also follow this pattern over time, it would look used and second hand quickly but where as this was first thought of as a disadvantage it does seem to reflect the atmosphere more suitable.
For the research into cheap stock paper Digital Print has a range of different thickness and prices of print paper but also for more mass produced materials G F SMITH's cheapest paper samples will be investigated too see which could be use for the book in commercial printing.
These are two of the cheapest white stock produced by GFSMITH, they are 0.28p a sheet for A4 but this would be cheaper for commercial printing, this works out cheaper than most of the other stocks looked at for these brief meaning that this stock would produce the cheapest final outcome overall.
Here are the example of the two white looked at currently for this brief, for GFSMITH the price range for ColourPlan their cheapest paper collection is-
0.28p per sheet for no embossing, A4 size, 135gsm
0.50p per sheet for no embossing, A4 size, 250gsm
this is the same for all the colour stock in the set, the gsm is 135 the lowest available, this will be thinner non durable paper but fits with ideas of this stock choice.
digital print at uni prices-
advantages of cheap material
-reflects the intent nature of a festival
-seems more informal
-cheaper production
-lighter to carry
-applies to the target audiences demands
-break/damages to reflect what happens at the festival
disadvantages of cheap material
-could not be used for years
-could create crap quality images
-feels in-superior in comparison to other books (does this make it stand out more??)
-would the images/text be readable
-might get damaged easily
photo paper
Photo paper stock would ensure the style of disposable camera imagery is reflect directly as the viewer will associate the stock finish with the same style of disposable camera photos form their childhood. This also uses the target audiences age to appeal to them, from feedback from a crit it was highlighted that the audience this book is created for/aimed at will have used disposable imagery in their childhood photos therefore that will associate this style of photo as a reminiscence(a link to the purpose of the book). This will allow the imagery to be seen in the best quality most accurate style to the media that produced them, since the media use to create the imagery is such a deep part of the concept this should be highlighted. Photo paper imagery is also very durable which link to an earlier idea for stock.
advantages of photo paper
-shows disposable photos in their original form
-durable
-allows the audience to reminisce via the media
-reflect the experience and the concept
-visually pleasing for the imagery since it was created in this style first
-will last years
-light0
disadvantages of photo paper
-expensive to print on/use for full imagery
-will it work on the printers at uni?
research-
For research into this type of photo paper stock i have taken to amazon, this is as this website is the most assessable for review of the product as well as give a more accurate deliver date for the produce which is need for the print slots which are book for the 1st. These are the best 3 types of paper available, a disadvantage of using the internet is that i cannot fell the item before purchase but this is made up by the review from others who have bought the produce therefore information about the downfalls and advantages of each stock choice can be seen. This method of looking at reviews has issues as they will contradict each other, therefore i will look though the common reviews combined with the descriptions to briefly summaries the feature of each which are relevant.
Negative feature are wrote in italics
For mass production of the book discussion with the printer would be made to see what photo paper they prefer to use and to see if this would be viable way to print the book or if the final cost of printing on to this material would cost too much to create a low cost final outcome. The type of printer effect what a paper stock can be used therefore the printer will know what type of stock will work best with the machines, so this would be done so that ti the cheapest yet most suitable photo paper. This is applied to this brief as it means discussions with the Digital Print Room and what style of paper the can print onto will need to take place before purchase of the paper.
