504 - Design Production, A - Z in Content, Irma Boom

Irma Boom

Irma Book is a renowned dutch book designer, she created book for the 'commissioner' as she calls the client as she feel 'client'  has negative connotation, it implies that designer are working for them and they're work is owned by they rather than working with the designer therefore she uses a more collaborative term. She feel book designer and graphic design should/will always put their own personally or style onto their work, this is why they are selected to design the project in the first place therefor the commissioner should expect work in this way. This explains that designer should create work that expresses them as a person as well as it suitable for the brief, this collage idea relates more to myself as the current work being produced as with the new idea change allows me to be more involved and excited by the brief as it style of design i'm more interested in.  In past briefs i have done more of this style of work, created more design/work in this way which feel have worked out more successful due to this being more of my style of work rather than minimalist graphic design, i work better in a postmodern college style rather than modernist design so this intents to produce a better output for this project. i'll create a book now that expresses my love for collage art as well as this style fitting the brief better due to reflecting the atmosphere/the festival more. Iram talks about how things from the heart work, how these are the most successful book, this style of design is from my heart, its design style i'm happier with for the design decision but also so it can be produced to the best of my ability as i can express the atmosphere i visited best via this style.

Another idea of Irma Boom is that books should challenge the audience, she's created books without page number (create a book commemorating the centenary of the Dutch conglomerate), books so small they cannot be read via the human eye (Irma Boom’s self-designed micro-catalogue), and a book where the audience has to rip the pages open to view the content( Colour based on nature). All these publication make the audience engage with them physical level as well as visually therefore stand out due to being different from easily readable books. They make the audience physically do something different than just read to use the book or make it hard to read the books, so the audience has to constrate on the subject more. This idea of book design grabs the audience more whilst making reading more than just words/picture on a page, this idea will influence this brief outcome as the book produced will different textured paper or different material for the pages so they can experience the festival/the book via touch as well as sight. Irmas book are just created to be practical but to give the audience something, to engage with the audience and challenge them, using different stocks and weight of the pages for this book aims to have the same effect.

Iram pointed out in her ted talk that she gets sad when she visits book stores as she book that shouldn't have been made into book, she things books are a capture of time, something that cannot change or be edited as time capture. She states that some books should be webpages or leaflets but not books, this highlighted the question why should this project be a book? This project should be a book as it capture a moment that over, a moment that cannot be changed but explored and revisited via the images. This book is a guide book but also a celebration of the festival that links images with advice but its capture of time thats gone, this link to her idea that book are a capture of time, of a moment therefore this book should defiantly be a book rather than a webpage. The books is a expression of an atmosphere, something capture but shouldn't be changed or edited but appreciated as it is.

Iram talks about her first book and how she worked B.C (before computer) with her design, she cut and pasted things by hand to see how layout work physically no just on a screen. This allowed me to relate heavily to her work style and ideas as i feel this method works better for me, the first idea was for this book was discarded after physical cut and paste versions of the layout was experiment with, it allowed me to asses the style of design being uses and to see how the final book would look to allowed me to see issues with it analyse how it didn't work, this then meant the idea had to changed but it was found via manual methods.

Irma boom has now become one of my favourite designers after this ted talk.
