504 - Design Production, A - Z in Content, Final Idea

Final Idea, Summary of all the decision made for the final book

cover
The final idea for the book is to produce a hardcover 7x5 landscape publication, the hardcover will insure that the book is durable as it'll protect the content as its waterproof, thick, strong and enduring enough to last a weekend at the festival even the wild changing weather. It heavily rains most year due to the time of year (end of august/ early September)and the location (leeds/the north) of the festival therefore the book will need to last heavy mass amounts of rain, this cover will resist this as well as mimicking all the waterproof items need for the festival. Also selecting a hardcover will create a stable long lasting book that will last years, this is that the book can be use for preparing for the festival for many different years as many people who visit will usually go more than once or go to more than one festival therefor it can be reused. Book-rum is also a very flexible material, it's very close to tent material therefore will express the features of a major item used and associated with festivals.

BENEFIT OF PRINT - TEXTURES CAN BE USED TO REPRESENT THE TENT AND IT'S DURABLE

-durable
-waterproof
-strong
-tent like

landscape
The layout of the book will be landscape, this is most of the images taken are landscape format therefore can be use in full size without alteration,  this format also reflects the original content taken for the brief as well as the research conducted into disposable camera image showed that this is the most common format for this photographic style. This arrangement will allow the pages to be open fully so that all the image can be seen completely without losing any part of the image which hasn't been included in the binding (this will be measured so the pages are sized to allow for the binding then the pages made to work with this), the book can be opened flat with full bleed pages with just the space for the binding used. This layout also allows for a the selected Japanese binding to be done as it would use a too large percentage of a portrait publication pages due to the way the binding uses up to 3 cm in on the pages. Landscape books allow the audience to flick thought the publication easier whilst viewing more large area of the individual pages therefore its more engaging for an audience as it give more design to attract their attention. Often photography or art book are design in this format, therefore this will fit within the genre of books as well as being informatively functional.
-art book style
-allow flat view
-fits with the binding
-more engaging
-same as the original images

binding
The binding method use for the publication will be Japanese/Stab stitch, the benefits of this methods link to the the same concept of using the book-rum hardcover, its the most durable hand bookbinding method whilst having decorative properties. The cover uses a material similar to tent like textures, tents are mostly held up using guide ropes which are situated all round the tent this then causing issues as when walking thought tents drunk most people trip on them or they break which can cause leaking tent but they are a fundamental feature needed to stop tents from blowing away or collapsing. Therefore putting the book together using string represents how the weekend relay on rope, the book will be held together using string mimicking the way that the tents are held up with guide ropes. Using a durable method for the book also means that the book will last years, it will work with the hard cover to produce a book that can be open and reuse for years without damage or losing pages. As the book will be landscape this method will be done so that with a crease after so the pages can open full bleeds whilst still allow the book to open flat yo link to  photography/art book. As the book is used as guide/information book as well as allowing the audience to reminisce allow the pages to be fully viewed will mean the information is readable.
-string link links to guide ropes
-strong durable
-allows full opening
-decorative

colour scheme
The main colour scheme of the book is taken from the content, some of the images had a blue hue added to photos due to a fault with this analog medium but as this book is celebrating the media as it has fault but it capture atmosphere/moment using a light blue in the colour palette will highlight this effect. As the content was taken on a sunny day, most of the photo include mass amount of blue sky which will allow the photos to fit better with the colour scheme but also allows the audience to think of the festival on sunny day rather than a miserable rainy day. Associating the book with a sunny day at the festival will remise happier memories.Light blue is a very calming colour, it has association with more relaxing environment than a festival by contracting with the busy imagery but is used so that the publication is a positive clear bright reflection without being overly busy or heavy aesthetically. The blue will be used to balance out the mud in the photos or the dark images to make the book overall seem light and positive rather then dark or depressing.  The blue will reflect the sky in the image but this also link to the other colour of neon/bright orange which will be uses to represent the sun in this scene, letting the colour scheme fully represent positive weather day at the festival rather then a miserable raining setting which would have negative connotation or memories as the book aims to remise the more positive part of the weekend. This links to the sun in mages but also contrast the blue enough to add more excitement to the book design, the orange is engaging, bright, eye-catching colour to will drag the attention of the audience. A bright orange is seen heavy in the images as this colour is heavily use in camping gear so that it can be seen in the environment, it stands out against the green situation to make sure it seen as it the contrasting colour. This is seen seen thought the tents at the festival as well as in the signs for the orange camping space where some of the content was taken.

LIMITATION OF PRINT - CORRECT COLOR NOT AVAILABLE FOR THE COVER TEXTURE, COVER TEXTURE HAD TO BE CHANGED

-light blue =  sky, bright/neon orange = sun
-light blue contrasts the busy imagery, calming
-positive conations
-orange=guide rope colour/camping equipment
-blue hue on images, links to effect of media and the content
-bright orange to grab attention/stand out

stock
For the stock choice for this publication a different range of stocks will be used, this is work with the idea of collaged content for the pages, collages and the festival are combination of mixes of different textures, fabrics and finishes therefore the stocked used for this book will reflect this. Some of the pages will be printed on photo-paper this is to highlight the effect/benefits of the medium used to take the images as take as all disposable camera images (for this brief and otherwise) are produced on glossy photo paper as well as to link to the style of imagery as this is associated with the experience. Some of the pages will be thinner normal gloss paper and some matt, this is as the book aims to represent the festival as an experience therefore reading the book shows be an experience for the view not only visually but also via touch, to shows the different mess of textures via using mixes of stock combinations. This add to the as the other string texture combined the book-rum cove texture and the range of stock will make a diverse book that involved more sense in the publication than just sight. Also some of the more basic plages that will have images printed on photo page but attach in on the same see thought paper will be added, this is a more plastic paper but allows text to be aded to the back of the image to be seen, this techniques come from how people uses to write the information on ht back of the disposable photos one they were printed to remind them of things/people, it link to the use/history of the disposable medium.

BENEFIT OF PRINT - TEXTURES CAN BE USED, DIFFERENT TEXTURES TO REFLECT DIFFERENT ASPECTS

LIMITATION OF PRINT - CANNOT ADD SOUND OR VIDEO TO TOTALLY EXPRESS THE EXPERIENCE

-engage the audience
-represent the vast different textures
-link the book to an experience
-used to show back of photos

collage
The content of the pages of the publication will be collages of the photos taken, items found and copy (quotes, information, stories) ect combined in a messy, ungrided more postmodern style that aims to portray how the festival feels, the atmosphere, the vibe and the tone of voice in aim to allow the audience to be immersed into memories or excitement related to the content. It will be produced as collection of collage pages, all different layouts to reflect how different each element and moment is at a festival, everything happens then differs the next, nothing is ever perfect therefore this needs to be simulated via the design. At a festival there is many different things happening at once, different sounds, smell, sights, bands, drinks, ect everything is happening in the same time frame, as Irma Book stated a book is a capture of time therefore this book has to capture all these different elements in the same design/page, a college will be the most suitable way to express this.  The layout, design and style so that all these element reflect the intended theme, to be an expression of the busyness. messiness and imperfect nature of the experience summed up as piece as of design via collage. The publication is aimed to be a expression of the experience yet also an engaging, formative book that connects which the audience via represented the aimed theme, so they relate to it, from feedback it was seen that this style of layout/design is the most effective way to allow the audience to engage.
