504 - Design Production, A - Z in Content, Concepts

Concept Ideas

Basic Ideas -
idea 1 -funny zine on the festvial experince, appeals to people who've been to festival or people who are going to a festival, combination of funny stories/anecdotes from the festival, story style zine as to tell a story of the experience from first had advice, could be sold as a gift for someone as lighthearted themes, no function use but sell due to appeal to audience via humour.ISSUES- how does it appeal to the audeince via the productions?? will i be able to collect that many mistakes?

idea 2- guide to festival mistakes, thing not to do at the festival links to imagery by using text that has links to the object or parts in the imagery eg- 'don't ever charge you phone at a festival it cost £10000 and last 5 minutes', under the imagery of a phone charging tent. things not to do, from people who have been before. advice therefore has purpose, for someone who's going to a festival mainly but also someone who's been to reminisce.things not to do, places not to go, food no to buy ect More informal guide to first hand things not to do. not serious, informal book

ISSUES - positive imagery but negative theme??? might scare people into not going due to negativity?

ideas 3- Shit guide to type at a festival, appeals to a graphic design audience is a collection of the worse type style taken from the photos, the worse type there is as there a wide range of terrible text so this pokes fun at it in a no serious informal manner, appeals to the audience as its lighthearted/funny. good as gift for graphic designer who like festivals, uses the worse photos from the set too to link to the theme of bad design. the design of the book would be very modernist to create a juxtaposition between the crap design and the design of the book, slick fancy finishes to clash with the messy style of the content. taking influence from other serious typography books for the design. ISSUES - small target audience, might not have that any images, already done a few shit type books, might not be seen as funny but mean to the brands at the festivals

idea 4- a publication that celebrates the style of photography, a disposable guide to leeds festival, all the book would be produced to be disposable to reflect the nature that people often leave a lot of stuff at the festival, they buy stuff for the festival and it only last for the weekend so this could reflect this in the paper stock choices/cover/binding. the book would link to the disposable camera project and talk about how to take good disposable camera images, the best places to get them developed, the best ways to get good lighting ect. The book would have a small functional use for anyone who wants to taken photos using this media. takes influences from the lomographic guides

idea 5 - a more serious version of idea 4, a book that tells a story of the festival via the imagery in a minimalist style design taking inspiration from the Dennis hooper drugstore camera book, this style of layout that celebrates the effect the imagery by making them the main focus. shows the photos as the effects of analog photographical media  thats seems to have died out in the modern technological age. A modern design for a old style imagery, to contrast with the style of capture technique whilst highlight the mistakes and issues with this style but as a good points as benefits, with small ideas of the history of the style, information about it and small detailed about why its no longer as popular as it once was.

FEEDBACK-

the festival as an experience should be shows eg mud, glitter, facepaint
the mistakes guide seems to negative

the disposable style book would link to festival ideas better
the more serious minimal book might not work as it targets and older audience but they haven't been to the festival as its not been running long enough
book needs to be loud, funny and crazy as that reflect the experience
maybe put in like bottle tops or stuff found at festivals
shit guide to festival has a very small audience, graphic designers that like festivals might be like 3 people
idea 2 is best

Idea 1-

The first idea for this brief is a book that documents the mistakes made at Leeds festival along with stories from the festival and informational advice in the form of a humorous guide book. The book will sum up the experience as a whole rather than visual imagery, using ideas that link the together the disposable camera style imagery with the copy. The copy of the book will include funny stories from the festival taken from primary and secondary sources, mostly personal experience from past goer, as well as advice for new goers and features/information of the festival that previous visitors can relate too. For example, the dedication of the book will be: Dear Alan, hope we meet again one day, your long lost friend Steve. This related the the chat at the festival where people shout 'STEVE' and this is responded to with 'ALAN'. The book will have designed an as gift book, that could be bought for anyone who’s visited the festival or wants to. This will target an audience who know someone who wants to go or has been or even for themselves by giving the imagery a story they can relate too. The purpose of the guide is too being a funny book that can allow the audience to look back and reminisce, but another feature of the book is to give advise in a more informal manner, a book that will excite them whist giving useful second hard personal advice. The book is a celebration of the festival experience in the form of a useful guide but also a humorous observational collection of primary experiences from people who have been.

Audience – Festival Goers/ People Who have Been
Purpose – Advice and reminisce from the festival, make the audience laugh
Concept – Humorous Guide to the experience of Leeds Festival

Feedback from these ideas was that the book should be created to reflect the experince the way that Irma Boom aims to create her book as a experince, the festival weekend should be shown via the production or features in the book. The most positive feedback about an individual idea was
idea 2, this as it the audeince would prefer a humous book to remise with, anecdotes would give the book an unique touch that would fill a gap in the markets as there currently isn’t a book that express the atmosphere of a festival. As festivals are not very serious experince it was felt that a serious book for this content would contrast the imagery in a negative way, the book should be a lighted publication rather than a heavily minimal formal functional one, the focus should be on expressing the festival experince as this is a major benefit of the content style.

Idea 2-

Based of the Lomographic Photographic guides set, this idea is to celebrate the analog style of imagery taken as the content to sell the book to photographically interested audience as A Disposable Guide to Leeds Festival. For this it will combine photos taken for this brief but also collect secondary photos from other people using the same media, this will express the atmosphere of the festival via the collection of different imagery and people’s experiences all using disposable camera shot. A vast collection of imagery taken from different years, different places and different people but combining as a celebration of the effects of disposable cameras. Showing the effects of using this media, for example the mistakes, the color hues, the blurred output but how it captures a moment in a different photo style not seen via digital media to make the book appeal to photographers. The book will link to the disposable camera project, a project set up to glorify this method of photography in different areas, it captures imagery using the media but then selects the content that is the most unique to this style, content that would be seen as mistakes or issues with the media but instead its explored as new style of imagery. The book will use imagery that’s captivating for anyone who is interested in the effects of disposable cameras but also anyone interested in how this media can capture and experience or felling rather than an image.
